Gulnar R. Vagapova DSc (Medicine), professor, Corresponding Member of Tatarstan Academy of Sciences was born in 1964. Dr Vagapova is the head of the Department of Endocrinology at Kazan State Medical Academy.

Prof. Vagapova graduated from Kazan State Medical Institute in 1987. In 1996, she became a candidate of science; in 2007, she became a doctor of science in the field of basic and clinical thyroidology. The main field of her research is the pathogenesis of autoimmune thyroiditis, the use of Doppler ultrasound and magnetic resonance imaging for differential diagnosis of thyroid diseases.

Prof. Vagapova defined the relationship between the content of the DNA-binding antibodies in the serum and the degree of activity in the autoimmune inflammation of the thyroid gland. For the first time it is possible to have the visual evaluation of the mechanism of interaction of antibodies to native DNA isolated from serum of patients with autoimmune thyroiditis, and native DNA molecules used atomic force microscopy.

Currently, Prof. Vagapova conducts studies to determine the genetic markers of programmed cell death in patients with autoimmune thyroiditis, acute criteria for prediction of vascular complications of type 2 diabetes, prognostic criteria of thyroid dysfunction in patients undergoing coronary angiography, developed algorithms for diagnosis and treatment of tumors of the adrenal, pituitary adenomas studied epidemiology in RT ; work on evaluation of the criteria of quality of care patients with diabetes in the RT,  study the condition of the thymus in the fetus, etc.

Prof. Vagapova – author of 116 publications, of which, more than 10 are translated and published in international journals. The scientific results were presented at the national and European congresses. 32 scientific reports made from 2005 to 2010.

Prof. Vagapova is the co-author of two patents for the invention. In 2009, patent number 2320990 “Method for detection of antibodies in the serum” was awarded the Diploma of II degree at the contest “Invention of the year in the Republic of Tatarstan”.

The project “Transseptal transsphenoidal microsurgical removal of pituitary adenomas with endoscopic monitoring,” which was developed with the direct participation of Prof. Vagapova in 2008 was awarded the Diploma of I degree of the Program “The Best Goods of the Republic of Tatarstan – 2008” Diploma of the Program “100 best goods of Russia” and in 2011 was awarded the US-Russia Business Union medal «Innovations for investments».

Prof. Vagapova is a member of the editorial boards of journals, “Nevrologicheskiy Vestnik” (Journal of Neurology), “Prakticheskaya Meditsina” (Practical Medicine) and member of the Academic Council to review issues of GOU DPO “KGMA Roszdrava”, Scientific Secretary of the Public Organization endocrinologists of RT, Scientific Adviser of the Republican program “Improving quality of care for patients with diabetes mellitus in the Republic of Tatarstan”, Scientific Adviser, the reviewer of various scientific papers, masters and doctorate.

She was elected as a Fellow of the Islamic World Academy of Sciences in 2012.
