Prof. Muhammad Anwar Waqar was born in Batala, British India, in June 1941. He is currently chairman of the Age Khan University Hospital and Medical College. He was awarded his BSc from Punjab University, Lahore, Pakistan, in 1963. MSc from the same university in 1964. PhD, Flinders University of South Australia, Bedford Park, South Australia, Australia (1973). 1972-1976, Dr Waqar was a Postdoctoral Fellow, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Cambridge, Massachusetts, USA. He was Advisor in the Department of Zoology, University of the Punjab, Lahore, Pakistan, 1982. In 1987, he was elected to the Fellowship of Pakistan Academy of Medical Science (PAMS). In 1991, he was elected to the Fellowship of the Institute of Biology (IOB), London.

In 1991, Dr Waqar won the First Award for publication of articles in the discipline of Biological Sciences by the National Book Council of Pakistan, Ministry of Education, Pakistan. He was elected to the Corresponding Fellowship of the Third World Academy of Sciences (TWAS), Trieste, Italy, in 1991. He is also the 1991 awardee of the Gold Medal in Chemistry of the Council of the Pakistan Academy of Sciences (PAS), and the 1993 Convocation Medal of Flinders University of South Australia. Prof. Waqar was elected to the Fellowship of the Pakistan Institute of Chemists (PIC) by the Executive Council of the Institute, in 1994. He is the Khawarizmi Prize laureate of 1991, awarded by the Iranian Research Organization for Science and Technology (IROST). In 1991, he was elected a Fellow of the Pakistan Academy of Sciences (PAS), and in 1998 he was elected to the Fellowship of the World Academy of Art and Science (WAAS). In the same year, he was elected to the Fellowship of the Pakistan Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, and conferred as the Zoologist of the year by the Zoological Society of Pakistan (ZSP).

In 1999, he was elected to the life fellowship of the Zoological Society of Pakistan. In 2000, he was awarded with the Civil Award (a Presidential Award given by the Government of Pakistan) Sitara-i-Imtiaz in recognition of services in the field of Chemistry. Dr Waqar is a member of the Biochemical Society (London), Medical Research Society of Pakistan, Pakistan Biological Sciences Society, Pakistan Genetics Society, Association of History and Philosophy of Science Pakistan). His main areas of research are Eukaryotic DNA replication, control of replication process, chromosome structure and function, identification and characterization of body fluids and renal stone protein, dietary fats and ischaemic heart disease. Apart from being involved in more than 20 research projects, Dr Waqar is a veteran of more than 135 publications. He was elected a Fellow of the Islamic Academy of Sciences (Amman, Jordan) in 2000.
