Prof Liaquat Ali was born in 1957. He is a medical graduate from the University of Dhaka (1982) with MPhil in Medical Biochemistry (1986) from the same University and PhD in Medical Cell Biology (1990) from Uppsala University, Sweden. Currently he is the Vice-Chancellor of the Bangladesh University of Health Sciences (BUHS) in Dhaka and he is also serving as the Honorary Professor in the Dept of Biochemistry & Cell Biology in the same University.
Major research areas of Prof Ali include physiology of insulin secretion, pharmacology of antidiabetic plant materials, etiopathogenesis of diabetes in Bengali population, nutritional evaluation of local food materials and public health aspects of cardiometabolic diseases. He has published 207 papers in peer-reviewed journals and he has delivered nearly100 invited lectures in regional and international scientific meeting. Presently he is credited with more than 3400 citations (Google Scholar) and his h-index in 29. He has now a Research Gate Score of 41.7. Prof Ali has been awarded with Fellowships/Memberships/Honors from various professional bodies/organizations including World Health Organization, International Program in the Chemical Sciences (IPICS, Sweden), International Foundation for Science (IFS, Stockholm, Sweden), Bangladesh Academy of Sciences (elected Fellow since 1999 and Best Scientist Award in the Biological Sciences, 2014), European Association for the Study of Diabetes (EASD), International Diabetes Federation (IDF), and International Union of Pure & Applied Chemistry or IUPAC (Honorary Fellow since 2003), Indian Public Health Association (2011), and Islamic World Academy of Sciences (IAS-COMSTECH Ibrahim Memorial Award 2013 and elected fellow since 2016). Presently he is the President of the Bangladesh Society of Medical Biochemists (BSMB) and he served as the General Secretary of the Bangladesh Endocrine Society during 2008-2016. He is also serving as a government nominated member in the Board of Trustees of the Hamdard Foundation. He has edited/coedited a number of journals and magazines. In addition to academic and scientific fields Prof Ali has great interest in sociocultural and literary activities. He is the Founder of Sangskriti Bikash Kendra and Founding Chairman of Pothikrit Foundation. He has particular interest in the history and philosophy of sciences and Bangla Academy has published his book on ‘Geometry and Philosophy’ in 1985.
