Prof. Atta-ur-Rahman, PhD in organic chemistry from Cambridge University (1968), has 1087 international publications in several fields of organic chemistry including 226 books published largely by major USA and European presses, 753 research publications, 37 international patents and 69 chapters in books. He is the Editor-in-Chief of six European Chemistry journals and Editor of the world’s leading encyclopedic series of volumes on natural products “Studies in Natural Product Chemistry” (fifty four volumes published under his Editorship‎ by Elsevier during the last two decades). Prof. Rahman won the UNESCO Science Prize (1999) and was elected as Fellow of the prestigious Royal Society (London) in July 2006. He has been conferred honorary doctorate degrees by many universities including (Sc.D.) by the Cambridge University (UK) (1987), Coventry University (UK) Bradford University (UK) and many others. He was elected Honorary Life Fellow of Kings College, Cambridge University, UK, conferred the TWAS (Italy) Prize. The Austrian government has honoured him with its high civil award (“Grosse Goldene Ehrenzeischen am Bande”) (2007) He was awarded the highest Civil Award for foreigners (Friendship Award) in October 2014 and became the first scientist from Muslim world to be elected as “Academician” (Foreign Member) of Chinese Academy of Sciences.. He is former President of Pakistan Academy of Sciences and Foreign Fellow of Korean Academies of Science and Technology (2006). He is President Network of Academies of Science of Islamic Countries (NASIC) and Foreign Fellow of Chinese Chemical Society.

He is the most decorated scientist of Pakistan having won four national civil awards including Tamgha-i-Imtiaz, Sitara-i-Imtiaz, Hilal-i-Imtiaz, and the highest national civil award, Nishan-i-Imtiaz. In recognition of his global outstanding services to the development of Science and Technology the largest university in Malaysia, University of Technology Mara, Malaysia UiTM, has established an institution entitled, “Atta-ur-Rahman Institute of Natural Product Discovery (RiND)” in 2013. Prof. Atta-ur-Rahman was the Federal Minister of Science and Technology/Chairman Higher Education Commission of Pakistan (2000-2008) and Coordinator General COMSTECH (OIC Ministerial Committee on Science & Technology) (1996-2012). He is Chairman of UN Committee on Science Technology and Innovation for the UNESCAP region covering 56 countries including USA, UK, Germany, Japan, Australia and most OIC member states.

Prof. Atta-ur-Rahman was elected as a Fellow of the Islamic World Academy of sciences in 1988.
